If you have seen a GSU-Japan flyer recently, you have probably seen Emma's work. Emmanuel Larbi, known to us as Emma, is a member of GSU-Japan and the graphic designer behind our flyers and the logo for our 10th anniversary. He also served as Creative Director of the 10th Anniversary Symposium.

From a new skill to Makers Hub

Emma's journey into graphic design began in 2020, when he set out to learn a new skill. He joined the Ghana Tech Hub design cohort, where he learned the fundamentals, and then grew through freelance projects and practical experience. In 2021 he started Makers Hub, which gave him the chance to take on more structured design work for individuals, organisations and businesses.

Since then he has worked across many concepts, brands and organisations, including Frontier Oil Ghana Limited, SheaJo, the Church of Pentecost, Christian Divine Church and the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC).

Design that communicates

His work focuses on flyers, logos and other forms of visual communication. But for Emma, good design is about more than looks.

“Design is not just about creating something visually appealing. It is about taking an idea and communicating it clearly to the person looking at the design.”

He prefers simple, intentional designs that are not unnecessarily complicated but still carry the essence of the message. Every project starts with understanding the idea: what the client wants to communicate, who they are speaking to, and what the audience should feel or take away. Often that means a conversation with the client first.

“I see design as transferring an idea from someone's mind into a visual form. Sometimes that idea is more than information: it could be an emotion, an experience, or a particular feeling.”

Working with GSU

As a GSU-Japan member, Emma started designing for the union in 2025, and it has been one project after another since then. Among them is our 10th anniversary logo, which surrounds the GSU emblem with Adinkra symbols and Japanese characters in the shape of the number 10.

“For me, it is not just about producing a flyer or a graphic. I think about the experience and feeling behind the design and how the final product represents what GSU is trying to communicate.”

Looking ahead

Emma wants to keep improving his skills, explore new areas of graphic and digital design, and work on bigger projects that combine design, communication, technology and creativity.

“Ultimately, I want my designs to do more than look good. I want them to communicate clearly, connect with people, and make an impact.”

Thank you, Emma, for giving GSU-Japan's ideas a face. See more of his work on the Makers Hub business page and on Instagram (@makers_hubb).
